Forgiveness: Luke 17:3-4

Day 20: Thursday, February 28

We all wrestle with forgiveness.

Should we or shouldn’t we? If we do, does it mean we’ve condoned the sin?

I believe forgiveness represents a new and hopeful beginning.

In this passage, the disciples believe forgiveness will lead the sinner to take advantage of them. Jesus tells them to forgive seven times.

I propose that seven signifies completeness. Forgive seven times and you will evolve into a better, more loving Christian.

However, we cannot attach conditions to forgiveness. We must absolve wholly. Doing so allows us to move forward, growing in God’s love and living fully.

Forgiving the offender releases us. It doesn’t mean we condone the act or tolerate future wrongdoings. Instead, forgiveness frees us from anger, resentment and other things that hold us down. Sinner and forgiver can start anew to live and love completely and authentically.

It also enables us to have a closer relationship with God. He sent His only son to free us from sin. We cannot develop a true relationship with Him if we are unwilling to forgive our fellow man, who is made in His likeness.

Rebuking others’ transgressions is difficult in today’s society. We’re expected to mind our own business, or face retribution. We often lack accountability and value personal rights over morality.

Although it is difficult, reproach and forgiveness are essential, if we are to thrive as the human race and in our faith. As English author William Blake said, “The glory of Christianity is to conquer by forgiveness.”
