Lent Day by Day 2008
Scriptural Reflections by Parishioners of St. James' Episcopal Church, Ages 6-97
Confession of Jesus as Lord: Luke 9:18-20
Day 30: Tuesday, March 11
When I read this passage in the Bible, I thought confession meant to admit that I did something wrong. Every week in church everyone says The Confession of Sins, and when we say this, we are using both types of confession. We are confessing that we have done something wrong- like not treating our neighbors as ourselves-and we are answering Jesus’ question “Who do you say I am?” by talking about his birth, life, and resurrection.
In this story, confession means how you answer Jesus’ question-“Who am I?” Peter answers this question by saying “The Messiah of God”.
When Peter says that Jesus is the Messiah of God, Peter is showing Jesus that he is a true follower and that he believes.
In my life, I confess by going to church, praying, participating in youth activities and making choices according to what I believe, and whom I believe in. If I were Peter I would find it hard, in a group of people who are saying totally different answers than I, to say that I believe that Jesus is the Son of God. The other people in the story were saying that Jesus is John the Baptist, Elijah, and one of the prophets from long ago who has come back. Jesus wants us to be like Peter and confess not only our sins but that we are true believers and followers of God. We confess our faith through our words and actions.
