St. James' Episcopal Church
Nourished by Word and Sacrament, we are sent out to do the work God has given us to do, to love and serve God as faithful witnesses of Christ our Lord

Contemplative Prayer

The Contemplative Prayer Ministry was formed at St. James' in January 2008, with the purpose of deepening our awareness of God and relationship with him through the ancient Christian practice of contemplative prayer.

This ministry seeks to expand the opportunity for prayer at St. James' and to provide support for maintaining the spiritual discipline of daily prayer. We wish to provide the opportunity for parishioners of St. James' and the wider church community to live the contemplative dimension of the Gospel.

The ministry will provide instruction in contemplative prayer methods including, but not limited to, Centering Prayer; Lectio Divina; Ignatian Prayer; Benedictine Prayer.

This ministry supports St. James' continuing vision to "inspire, equip and empower parishioners to serve as active disciples of Christ." Participants in this ministry are actively involved in many other ministries at St. James' and in the community. That work is deeply influenced by the prayer life of this ministry.

The Contemplative Prayer Ministry meets in the Sanctuary at St. James' on Monday evenings from 7:30 p.m. to 9:00 p.m., for centering prayer and Lectio Divina. Occasionally, the group uses other space within the St. James' complex that is free from interruption and distraction.

At present, there are approximately twelve active members of this ministry. The number of participants on any Monday evening could be as few as two or three or as many as ten, with an average of six to eight participants.

All are welcome to participate. Prior experience with Contemplative Prayer is not required. Participants may attend as they are called and as often as they can. Attendance at Contemplative Prayer events is open to all and participants may join at any time.

In addition to the regular Monday night opportunity to pray together, contemplative retreats are offered at St. James’, usually during Advent and Lent, and other events may be sponsored to learn about various contemplative prayer and practices.

Training materials such as Father Thomas Keating's videos and books will be in the Library, and are available to new members.
