Although literacy programs are not new to the Leesburg community, our program fills a specific need that is not currently being met in Loudoun County. Our vision is to provide an integrated literacy program for low income rising third graders who are at risk of falling behind in grade level reading and who are not already being serviced in the public schools. We are currently working with Loudoun County Public Schools and other agencies in order to identify the children we will work with as we plan and implement a reading camp-like program.
At our camp, our focus will be to provide children with individualized reading instruction (by certified teachers and volunteer tutors) geared to promote and enrich the reading process (e.g., decoding, vocabulary building, writing, comprehension, pleasure reading, etc.) in a theme based, fun-filled, non-school like environment, as well as self-esteem building activities geared to boost vocabulary, experiences and confidence through interactive fieldtrips, tennis/swimming lessons, etc.
