The Personal Finance Ministry was established in July 2008 with the goals of raising awareness of the Biblical significance of being a good steward of one's money, day in and day out, and of the importance of living within one's means. Being prosperous is about more than having "stuff." True prosperity is living a life which directs our financial resources towards those things that glorify God.
The ministry was kicked-off by the nationally-syndicated personal finance columnist at The Washington Post, Michelle Singletary. Michelle graciously accepted our invitation to lead "Money Matters with Michelle Singletary" at St. James', to live into its mission of reaching out to other church communities and duplicate First Baptist Church of Glenarden, MD's ministry successes.
Near the end of 2009, the Personal Finance ministry completed a session based on Michelle Singletary's newest book The Power to Prosper: 21 Days to Financial Freedom; that session was received well.
In 2010, we offered a more personal one-on-one style of financial help than the group sessions held earlier, to address some of the challenges our community might be facing. We offered a series on "Finding Christ in a Simpler Christmas" (see "Inserts" to the right).
