St. James' Historic Cemetery

Preservation Effort

WHY PRESERVE?

Once restored, St. James’ Episcopal Church hopes our historic cemetery will offer...

Remembrance

to create a quiet space where all can acknowledge and learn from the past, fostering unity and understanding within our community.

Recognition

to recognize and honor all those interred here--those with monuments and those in unmarked graves, including enslaved and free African-Americans from our community.

Reflection

to preserve the historic cemetery as a place of peace and reflection for all who visit.

This sacred space offers a unique opportunity for the St. James’ community to foster goodwill and lead new people to our doors and to unity with God and each other through Christ.

QUICK FACTS

  1. The St. James’ Historic Cemetery lies at the heart of Loudoun County's busy Courthouse Complex and holds the church's Columbarium.

  2. St James Episcopal Church and its cemetery were originally located on this half-acre plot on Church Street. The old Church was replaced by the current building on Cornwall Street in 1897.

  3. The historic cemetery, which was used for ground burials from 1811 to about 1890, though only a few ground burials took place there after that. It was left to vines and honeysuckle, and over time many of the old headstones were broken or lost.

  4. A new St. James’ Historic Cemetery Committee was commissioned in 2024.
